Pole Dancer Natalia Dornell

How did you find Pole Dance or did it find you?

Pole dance found me nine years ago when I was a dancer. I began experiencing without previous knowledge and trough years of practise I developed this passion.

Who taught you?  Or how did you learn?

I started by myself. Later when foreign pole dance performances videos were available I copied some moves and then, two years ago, I had some training to improve my techniques in Art Dance Studio the most recognized school in my country.

How did you think and feel back then, being a newbie?

Nine years ago I didn’t know the complexity and scope of Pole Dance since it was practically unknown in Argentina and information very poor. It was only about me, Pole and my preferred music trying to create some different tricks.

And now?

Now the activity has gained recognition and is practised by more than a thousand women in my country. I feel great for pioneering and being recognized as the best dancer.

Where or who do you get your inspiration from?

I usually keep updated and research on great dancer’s performances worldwide. I learn what I like most from their performances and add it to my performances with my own characteristics and style. My best inspirers are the Australian pole dancers Jamilla Deville and Felix.

Describe your dancing style in one sentence.

Refined, elegant, soft… Everybody says it seems I’m suspended in the air.

What training regimes/Diets do you have?

Apart from my Pole training I have some specific training for strength and stretching improvement.

How often do you pole? And how long for?

I usually train twice or three times a week. Before a competition I train up to four hours every day.

What are your thoughts and opinions about the industry and pole dancing being more main stream now?

Pole dance is increasingly becoming a well known and respected sport and artistic activity. Every day more girls select it to train their bodies, have fun and develop self esteem. In South America, although it has developed at a surprising speed it will take some time to reach the maturity it already has in Europe.

How have things changed?

Pole dancers are more professional, performances have reached an impressive complexity and beauty. The activity is respected and girls start learning younger.

What are your favourite moves?

Hand Spring, Knee hold, Pole box splits and straight edge split.

How long did it take you to nail those?

It took me some time to gain the required stretching but it was easy for me thanks to my strength.

Who are your favourite dancers out there now?

I enjoy Elena Gibson’s style and the expertise of Australian pole dancers Jamilla Deville and Felix.

What competitions have you entered or won?

I won Miss Pole Dance Argentina 2008 out of eighteen contestants.

What are your future plans for pole dance?

Keep on training, competing and perfecting my techniques.

Do you have any upcoming events?

Next September I will compete in Miss Pole Dance south America 2009 which will be held in Argentina. Since Amsterdam Cup was cancelled I would also like to compete in a world class event this year.

What hints and tips would you like to share with our readers?

If you want to do great in pole dance you should consider complementary training to gain strength and stretching. This will allow you improve your techniques and avoid injuries.

The Pole2Pole Cup Oxford Heat

Pole fitness has evolved and is now considered the hottest emerging extreme sport in the UK and the world today, as well as being currently rumoured as an event for the Olympics. With this development in mind Pole2Pole Magazine launched a new type of amateur competition.

On Saturday 14th May 2011, (www.thepolefitnessacademy.co.uk) Pole2Pole Magazine hosted the third round of The Pole2Pole Cup amateur pole dancing competition at the Pole Fitness Academy, Ozone Leisure Centre, Grenoble Road in Oxford. This competition was designed specifically for women new to the sport and looking for a challenge.

Seven competitors lined up to perform their routines in front of a panel of judges: Sam Jenkins from Glide Fm/Jack FM, local DJ “Spex” and Miss Pole Dance New Zealand 2008 Amy Richardson-Impey.

The site for this competition was the amazing studio venue at the Ozone in Oxford, with its fabulous floor to ceiling windows giving outstanding views over the local countryside. On entering the studio the atmosphere was excited, friendly and expectant. It was a rare, open chance for partners and families to see what pole dancing and pole fitness is really all about.

Backstage and during the warm-up session, the contestants chatted happily, exchanging ideas and tips on pole technique, helping each other with make-up and hair and some serious lashes and extensions applied to finish off costumes which were mostly handmade by the contestants themselves.

The competitors “tableaus” showed amazing talent, ingenuity and enthusiasm. The sixty strong crowd of well wishers made up of friends and family, made sure of a great atmosphere.

The competition opened with Michael Jackson’s “the way you make me feel” by Chrissie Kent and we were then treated to interpretations by Natasha Medlin dressed as Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and Beverley Kote as a fringed Spanish dancer with the Gaiema Tango. Liz Segbeer  brought us Placebo’s Infra red while Lorna Ticknell showed great skill in use of props as a Miss Money Penny  style character, performing to Mercy.

Runner up, Louise Forshaw from the Pole Attack School (www.pole –attack.co.uk), demonstrated poise, strength and elegance dancing to “White Blank Page” by Mumford and Sons”. She twirled effortlessly and languidly round the pole, bringing real sensuality to her role whist wearing a diaphanous purple blouse and black shorts.

However, there was one clear winner – Joanne Cleeve. She brought us “Bourbon in your eyes” by Devil Doll. Trained by the Bicester branch of the Pole Fitness Academy and after only having just six months of lessons, she managed to cheekily mix the burlesque style of Dita Von Teese and the art of pole. She managed to use and control a diversity of props including a chair, gloves and removal of a bustle style skirt.

Joanne looked as though she had just left the Moulin Rouge in her red and black corset with matching hat, jauntily angled mini and long black gloves. She amazed us all with her beautifully controlled, dramatic descents; she involved the crowd throughout her double pole routine and left them applauding and shouting for more. She is truly a natural; we will enjoy seeing her develop her individual style as the competition goes on.
What struck me throughout the competition was the diversity of professional backgrounds from which the competitors came. Ranging from financial services and charity organisations to law enforcement and forensic science; the majority of contestants had only been introduced to pole in the last six months to a year.  This made their confidence and professionalism in their performances all the more amazing.

During the marking we were treated to a breathtaking display of dual strength by advanced Pole Fitness Academy dancers Bella and Caroline, who showed us synchronised pole movements, coupled with grace and elegance.

Winner of the Kent heat of the The Pole2Pole Cup 2011 Amateur Competition, Samantha Pickles, really impressed us with her passionate rendition of the tango that we asked her to perform at the interval of the show. She expertly and dramatically seduced her obedient tie-wearing pole “partner”.

We were also privileged to see Amy Richardson-Impey’s sleek, polished, circus inspired award winning routine. This New Zealand born international performing artist has been teaching, choreographing and performing on and offstage for well over a decade. While most prominently performing throughout New Zealand, she is internationally acclaimed and most well known for her work in the pole dance industry, impressing audiences worldwide. She is well-versed in essentially all disciplines of dance and has most recently been teaching this art at Taylors Pole Retreat. She is planning to return to the UK in October 2011 for her new series of workshops. We were truly lucky to attract a judge with such an international reputation.

It was a fantastic afternoon which showcased the best of new local talent organised the Pole Fitness Academy and their senior instructor, Lucy Cropper. Lucy is no stranger to competition herself and has inspired countless ladies to take up pole fitness as a sport.  She gave a fabulous closing speech and thanked all those involved in organising the day, including Mel Evans (main compare), Roxy Young (filming), all those from the Pole Fitness Academy, the judges and Pole2Pole Magazine owner Mr John Meredith for creating this fantastic opportunity for the dancers.

The winner, Joanne Cleeve and runner-up, Louise Forshaw, go through to The Pole2Pole Grand Final being held on Friday 28th October 2011 at The Civic Hall, Blackshots Lane, Grays in Essex. See the Pole2Pole Magazine website: www.pole2polemagazine.com, for more details. The winner of The Pole2Pole Cup 2011 competition will receive as a grand prize, a one night stay in a local hotel in Essex and entry into The British Isles Pole Dance Champion 2011 competition the following day, which is aimed at the amateur, professional and champion pole dancers from around the British Isles. We hope to see you all there!

The Uses of Mighty Grip’s Gripping Aid

The company Mighty Grip, was born with one product, a basic grip aid that is simply named Mighty Grip. The formula was purchased in 2000 from a company that was going out of business; it was then reworked, repackaged, and sold across the world.

The patented Mighty Grip product is sold for $10.95 and each tube of Mighty Grip has over 150 applications for the hands. Depending on the sport it is being used for, the product can last varying amounts of time. For example, when used to play golf, the gripping aid may only need to be applied once for an entire 18 holes. When used in baseball or softball, a pitcher may want to put it on every 3 innings.

The product is most popularly used as a pole dancing gripping aid. The athletes use the powder on different areas of their body, depending on their pole routine. The powder gives them the necessary grip that they need in order to get the best results.

Mighty Grip powder works by the heat of the body, the warmer the body, the better the product is going to work. The product must be applied directly to the body in order for it to activate.  If it is applied to an inanimate object, it will simply fall off.   The product is sold to studios or directly to end users, and Mighty Grip also has distributors in Russia, Australia, England, South America, and that’s the way it’s been growing.

Mighty Grip Sells Equipment for Pole Dancers Needs

Phoenix based company, Mighty Grip, sells a variety of sporting goods but specializes in equipment used for pole dancing fitness.

Mighty Grip’s original powder gripping aid product, was picked up by pole dancers and was used to improve their grip while performing their difficult dance routines. The product helps many novice and expert dancers develop more challenging routines and dance moves.

Mighty Grip has taken off as the pole dancing industry has grown. “As pole dance grew, the sport itself, our product moved along with it. Then, we started to get requests for protective gear because this is a contact sport,” said Joel Bretan, the owner of Mighty Grip Inc.

The company has begun to phase out other sports equipment in order to focus on designing new products to provide to the pole dancers. “We’re doing so well with pole dancing equipment, that it just does not pay to continue the other sporting goods,” Bretan said. “We have found a niche, and so far it’s working well.”

The Mighty Grip powder is a powder substance that can be applied to any area of the body to provide better gripping power. The product is activated by body heat, so the warmer the body, the better it works. In the past, the powder has been used for golf, baseball and tennis. During the use of the powder in pole dancing fitness, the athletes often apply the powder to various locations on their body to provide the best grip on the pole.

Because of their niche market, Mighty Grip has begun to cater to the needs of the pole dancing athletes. They have created a line of protective braces and pads to be used while doing floor and pole routines.

The newest products offered by Mighty Grip include an ankle brace that can be worn with platform shoes and sole savers to protect the dancer’s feet.

The ankle brace has been designed to protect the dancer’s ankle while wearing shoes. The brace features a Velcro strap that connects under the arch of the shoe, providing the dancer with the support they need without taking away from their style.

“The product is really catching on,” Bretan said. “We have been selling ankle protectors, but they could not be used over a shoe, so what we have done is made a protector with an open bottom.”

The company’s new Sole Savers, also provides the athletes with protection that was not available to them before. This product protects the ball of the foot, allowing the dancers to train longer, and build up more endurance when doing floor work.

“Because for a lady or a man to do a four or five minute routine on a pole, you’ve got about 40 hours of work to produce that routine, and they get pretty ripped up,” Bretan said. “The body gets bruised, and we want to prevent that.”

Mighty Grip’s products are now available in 67 countries all over the world, with distributors in Russia, Australia, England, South America and the United States. As the sport continues to grow, Mighty Grip vows to be there providing everything that the athletes to produce the best possible routines.

“The industry is booming, absolutely booming. To be honest with you, the United States is about two or three years behind the rest of the world,” Bretan said. “I think you’re going to see it quadruple in size in the next two years here in the United States, studios are popping up, and hopefully I’ll be part of the group.”

The 2010 European & British Isles Pole Dance Competitions

On Friday 15th October 2010 and Saturday 16th October 2010, the pole dancing world was treated to 2 of the most talked-about pole dancing competitions that were held in the United Kingdom.

The competitions were The European Pole Dance Champion 2010 and The British Isles Pole Dance Champion 2010. Hundreds of spectators each night attended the 2 day event and crowded into The Civic Hall at Grays in Essex. They came from around Europe and the UK and were not disappointed with the double back-to-back pole dancing competition. Spectators were able to see all their favourite pole dancers under one roof.

Many top name pole dancers attended from the pole dance industry to battle it out to for the top titles and amazing prizes, such as the likes of Sally-Ann Giles from the UK and Hanka  Venselaar from Holland. One of the prizes was a one week stay in the USA to join one of the OC Pole Fitness Instructor Training Course held by World Champion Felix Cane. There was also a holiday to Turkey for six, photos shoots, free venues for holding workshops and many more prizes, making the 2 competitions the biggest giveaway prizes in the UK.

The 2010 European Champion was the first competition ever to have been held in the UK and the second year for running The British Isles competition. The organizers and promoters of the 2 competitions were Pole2Pole Magazine. Before anyone had even attended the two events they were the most talked-about pole dance competitions in the industry – everyone was excited about what the events were going to be like and how many fantastic names were going to be performing at them. Ticket only cost £20 for each competition. This was a very reasonable ticket price and it is well-know within the pole dance industry that Pole2Pole Magazine are the most fair pricing promoter within the industry.  Anyone who was looking forward to seeing these amazing pole dancing competitions was not let down and they were able to see the best of the best pole dancers performing each night. The industry knows that if you want to see the best pole dancing competitions, you need to come to Essex!

Essex is the only county that holds more pole dancing competitions each year than anywhere else in the UK. You’re never entirely sure what to expect with any pole dance event beforehand, apart from looking forward to seeing the performances. Therefore, here is just a little bit of the feedback from some spectators of the 2 amazing competitions of last October:

Fay W, from the north of the UK: “The strongest impression of the two events that overrides the entire amazing pole dancing, is the incredible and fantastic organisation.”

Stacy P, from the South-East of the UK: “Of all the pole dancing events that are around, these were two of the best that I have ever been to.”

Sam R, from the West of the UK: “The venue layout was fantastic; the spectators were looked after so well and the 2 competitions started on time and ran like clockwork.”

Each night the competition was opened with a fantastic and lovely pole dance performance from Elaner Gibson and Lisa. Their facial expressions and being dressed as two clowns went so well with their performance and it was a dream to watch. The amateur category began straight after the opening performance; it was quite varied in ability but all performances were unique to watch, which was also helped along by the competition organisation, the sound and lighting. The MC over the 2 nights was Robbie Valentine and very special thanks go out to Robbie for the two nights that he was in total control of. Robbie was able to handle his task very well and he frequently made the audience smile and remembered every one of the European pole dancer’s names. He was in regular contact with the judges and made sure they had plenty of time to confer before he asked the next contestant to come on stage.

This was also due to the fantastic organisation between the two competition managers, Annette Savill and Hannah Savill, as they held all performances together and made competitors feel at home. They took care of the organisation backstage along with the sound and lighting team owner Mr Doug Hunt, whose overwhelming light display and top sound made the evenings look and sound wonderful.

Doug Hunt set out the staging for the 2 Alistage 14 feet poles, which were set up just right for all the dancers and they worked and looked fantastic. There was not one complaint from any of the contestants. The contestants even let the organizers know the poles were not slippery and were thoroughly cleaned each time between five pole cleaners and in addition, that the stage set-up was faultless. There was one 14foot spinning pole and one 14foot static pole and the spinning pole span like a spinning top, so smoothly.

As the dancers started to arrive at the venue, they needed to book themselves into the competitions and were amazed to find out that they were able to choose which colour background lighting they wished to have to perform to, so that it would mach their outfits. The organizers were very happy to be told by all the contestants that they have never been asked which colour background lighting they would like, and they know of not one other pole dancing competition who have offered this. This is what separates Pole2Pole as organizers from any other pole dancing organizer.

The supporting audience from Europe and the UK were very respectful all evening and after the first 20 minute break, the professional category then followed and once more throughout this category, the competition got better and better with delightful performances and more use of the spinning pole.

The audience loved every minute and throughout each category, they were continuously applauding with each performance.

The climax of each night was the Champion of Champion’s categories. This is where the best of the best pole dancers battle it out for the biggest titles. This category was performed at around 10.30pm.

The competitors in the 2 competitions were breath-taking and performed brilliantly, with the winner of the European competition being Hanka V and the winner of the British Isles being Sally-Ann Giles. The two of them were very inspirational for pole dancers that wish to perform at competition level.

Once the results were ready, the competitors were called back to the stage with the judges whilst the results were read out and all the dutiful sashes, trophies and medals were awarded.

Everyone on stage at this point was in a dream world and photos were being taken all around them, plus the complete 2 evenings of competitions were filmed.

On the Saturday night an after-party at Colors Nightclub in Basildon was arranged by the organizers. A large number of people then left for the party which started from 12 midnight and went on until the early hours.

Everything over the 2 competition nights was positive and the judging was done by pole dancers. All the competitors did amazingly and the results of the fantastic running, efforts, organisation and the presentation were the best that any pole dancing organizer or promoter could wish for.

The 2 competitions were filmed and all the performance footage has been made available on 2 DVDs which has all been made professionally. Each DVD displays all the amazing pole dancers and hopefully also shows the general public that pole dancing in Europe and the UK represent this as a fitness sport.

Some people have a critical eye towards pole dancing and any organisation that tries to take on this kind of competition needs to make the competitions be seen as a very professional and fantastic sport. This must be presented from the entire pole dance industry, just as the 2 competitions that were organized by Pole2Pole Magazine, as Pole2Pole are just one organizer which is part of the back bone of this industry.

Most of the pole dance industry says that Pole2Pole Magazine is the voice of pole dance around the world, plus it is the first and only pole dance fitness magazine in the world.

“It’s just amazing that they’ve set themselves up to represent the pole dance industry worldwide. We seriously deserve them and we hope they will carry on this good work for a long time to come.”

Pole Dance Cup International Pole Dance Competition 2011

By Men's & PDP

The Pole Dance Cup is an international pole dance competition which is organized by Pole Dance Project and (this year) is co-organized by Men's Day. The first ever Poland Pole Dance Competition was also organized during Men's Day in 2010. It met with huge interest and warm greetings among viewers and all press and other media.

From May 2010 a lot has changed – Poland has become more open regarding a new form of dance/fitness – pole dance. The media now mention pole dance more often and in April 2011, The Polish Pole Dance Association organized its first National Pole Dance Tournament under patronage of PFA (Pole Fitness Association). The organizers of this competition took it one step further – they decided to create the International Pole Dance Competition – Pole Dance Cup, which is the first ever Polish pole dance competition. They contacted many international pole dance organizations, magazines, etc. to achieve the best possible outcome, to act in accordance to international standards and to let the world know that “Poland has started Pole Dancing!”

The idea of Pole Dance Cup (apart from Polish contestants competing with contestants from all around the world) is to promote Pole Dance as a form of sport/fitness/dance discipline, which has nothing to do with erotic dance known from nightclubs. Nowadays it is becoming more common for people to see the difference between erotic pole dance and pole dance for fitness, which can be viewed during international and national competitions, championships, tournaments, etc., however unfortunately for some people, pole dance still remains inappropriate. Pole Dance Cup's organizers want to prove that pole dance is a noble discipline which deserves to be acknowledged and respected.

This year, Pole Dance Cup 2011 will take place on 4th June 2011 on the Ground Floor of Horse Races Lane Służewiec, Warsaw, Poland, Puławska 266 Street. It will take place during the famous event of Men's Day 2011.

Pole Dance Cup is a competition that in agreement with PFA was approved and listed on the PFA competitions list. Other Sponsors and Patrons are: New Orleans Club – actively support promoting pole dance as a sport/fitness/dance discipline; Pole2polemagazine – international magazine about pole dance; Russian Pole Dance Federation – organizer of European Pole Dance Championships; Trendy Magazine – Polish magazine about dance, music and fashion.

The complete list of all sponsors and patrons, rules of Pole Dance Cup and other significant information will be available at www.mensday.pl, www.poledancecup.com, www.poledanceproject.pl and on the Facebook pages of the organizers (Pole Dance Project, Men's Day).

To gain more information or to apply for the Pole Dance Cup you can write to: info@pdproject.pl or natalia@pdproject.pl.

It is with great pleasure to inform you that during Pole Dance Cup (during the breaks for Jury deliberation) we will be able to take part in the debut of some very fine artists – Ola Karry (vocals) and Tomasz Grabski (saxophone) – artists cooperating with the Pole Dance Project.
